I 2nd the bathroom comment.
by BienAqui
I don't know what the mens room looks like, but I have been coming to this bar since it opened. Please do something with the ladies room. It's disgusting.Where is the health dept?Isnt this an issue for them? This used to be a little more happening.I like that it's a bar for post punks and goths,etc..That would be me as well. But many of our scene has died of overdoses or moved.I like that it's a getaway from all the meatheads, sorority girls, jocks. But that shouldn't be the only reason why I go to a bar. There used to be so many hot guys that would hang out there.I never see any hotties.Unless they bring along their girlfriend.
- Pros: bartenders
- Cons: bathrooms and unattractive men
Anybody Home!!

Well, going there was truly an experience. We went there on Friday night at 9:30pm and nobody was there. No music, no bands, no happy hour, and NO people! Alot happening at the other bars on the street. The Poor House is soooo poor. Needs alot of work done. Thank goodness it is dark in there. Be very careful using the bathroom ladies. Anything can crawl out of the holes in the walls. Thank goodness they do not serve food there. I can truly say that the bartender was a sweetheart. Great guy! I felt sorry for him being there all alone. Do not recommend, go somewhere else.
- Pros: The Bartender
- Cons: parking, the place is poorly rundown, no band, no food, no people,
Ok place, not the heaven it's made out to be

"sick of all the crowds and loud dance music at the other bars and clubs in downtown then go to poorhouse."
This place has crowds as well. Not always the best kind. Besides the usuals that hang out there a lot of the trendy polo shirt wearers like to come in from the main strip. You know the types, they like to "slum it" with the lesser people. Not only does that provide problems with crowding but they are generally drunk already and fights happen. Then you have the regulars outside that like to pick fights if you so much as glance at them. Always fun.
Sick of loud music? Don't come here then. Usually generic music played at volumes that eliminate any good conversations and even makes ordering drinks a task. Sometimes they get good bands but not usually.
So, in the end this place is like every other bar downtown. Crowds and loud music. It's just dirtier and some of the people that hang out there have some sort of inflated attitude that they are the cool alternative crowd that only drinks in dives.
In all it's your average place with the average regulars attitude. It's not the oasis of greatness that the reviewers are making it out to be.
- Pros: Staff is friendly
- Cons: Location is a pain as any downtown location is
Has it's faults, but a good place to spend a few hours

A good place to hang out. Fine selection of beers and the people that work there are very friendly. As far as being trendy, it's not in the traditional sense regarding the area it's in, but it is in the sense that a lot of people there are the "anti-trendy" trendy types. A lot of guys pretending to be rockabilly greasers and a lot of girls trying to be Betty Page lookalikes. Get beyond that and you can find some genuinely interesting people to talk to. As far as the live music...once you've been a few times you'll tire of it quick. While there's some diversity to it, it's not often and you'll find yourself seeing the same generic "blues" bands over and over again. Also, you'll find yourself wanting to go outside more often than not if you want to engage in any conversation, there's nothing worse than being in mid-conversation when the band comes back from break and having to scream in the ear of whomever you're speaking to. Needless to say, the music is very loud and this won't be the place to go to talk for very long. You may complain that there is no food, but the "poorhouse" atmosphere and genuine run down appearence may make you glad. I wouldn't eat anything that wasn't prepackaged elsewhere. There are some good places nearby for food though and no minds when you bring your food back to the bar with you.
- Pros: Good beer, great bartenders
- Cons: Loud music, not always good, some bad crowds here and there

sick of all the crowds and loud dance music at the other bars and clubs in downtown then go to poorhouse. its like family. family that will kick you in the butt.
The bar's true riches lie in its down-to-earth vibe and excellent live music.

In Short
The Poor House is still the place where the unpretentious can go for a beer and live music from local acts. A neighborhood mainstay, the Poor House is especially known for blues, funk and rock music. The rickety wooden stage decorated with license plates and hubcaps is reminiscent of a backwoods bar, but the crowd isn't hillbilly. On any given night, the place is packed with both the jeans and T-shirt types and the suits.

Eat elsewhere because there's no food for your stomach, just food for your soul. Great live music. Super selection of beers. Bartenders that know their way around the bottles of booze to serve you the perfect drink. Friendly, funky & fun.
- Pros: Music, Beers, Booze
- Cons: Munchies Missing
