Las Olas Riverfront ~ Still In It's Infancy by Lori T. at InsiderPages
Contributor at Insider Pages
Trying to emulate San Antonio's popular River Walk area, Ft Lauderdale has come up with the Las Olas Riverfront which sits on the New River portion of the Intracoastal Waterway.
This is mall-like area with numerous eateries, local shopping, historic houses, and a large two-story cinemaplex. So far it's still trying to attract businesses so it's not the hot spot they tout it to be (as of Dec 2004) but it does hope to be so by the fall of 2005.
The Riverfront attraction is accessable via the popular Water Taxi, or by car by simply driving west from the beach on Las Olas until it ends. Both self and valet parking are available for a fee.
PROS: Easily accessable
CONS: Not yet at full gear
An open-air space that tries to create the feeling of an all-American town square.

In Short
Patrons can walk down sidewalks past Sunglass Hut, Barnie's Coffee and incense kiosks to a square where bands play in a gazebo beside the New River. The romantically inclined linger at the river's edge or take a ride on the Water Taxi. Long lines form at the Regal Cinema 23 theater and everybody eats, eats, eats, with choices ranging from Dan Marino's Town Tavern to Max's Grille to Hooters.
Loved it!

We loved everything about it. Great place to eat, drink, stroll, listen to music. Can be very romantic too! The price of parking is well worth it.
