Tips for Small World School

Great School! My baby just started attending recently and I have nothing but good things to say about it! The teachers are all caring and attentive to not only my child but the older children as well. When I have been in there at the end of the day to pick my baby up I have observed the teachers working together to come up with new fun and educational activites for the older kids. I also have talked to a lot of the parents who have kids attending. They are all happy with the school and a few attended the school themselves as children!!!

This daycare is a hidden gem. Ms. Elaine has made a comfortable, structured and fun environment for my 2 children. With over 30 years of experience she' seen and done it all and is willing to provide suggestions and recommendations for handling various situations. It's more than just a daycare it's a family. The teachers are caring, knowledgeable and dedicated. My son was very well prepared for kindergarten from both a social and academic standpoint. I thank Small World for all you've done!

Lead paint dangers !!! - brain damage. The Small World "School" or house on 4th Place, is very old being built in 1941. It has numerous coats of lead paint inside and out making it hazardous for young children. Please read the EPA's brochure on lead paint (www.epa.gov/lead/pubs/leadpdfe.pdf) before considering leaving your young children here. It is a crime that it is even legal to operate a day care with this hazard, however if the lead has been painted over, it is allowed. The hazard still exists even when covered with latex .. paint chips and peels, and even a small amount of lead is extremely dangerous to young children.

Think twice. When you enter the front door of this place, it the children are napping, you have to tiptoe through them. Little mats on a hardwood floor, no carpet. If you don't walk in carefully you will step on someones child.

Beware, the owner has no friends in Victoria Park, despite living there for decades. Very few Victoria Park residents take there kids there as the owner, Elaine Lawrence a/k/a Elaine Schulze a/k/a M Elaine Wilson a/k/a Misty Lane has a reputation with both the City Building and zoning department (to the point that they will not take her calls) and the Victoria Park Neighborhood Association. In order ro refinance the building, she had to pay off over 30 liens to sub contractors that had not been paid !!!

Do you really want your kids in a place like that? Ask VP Association Members.

Not a school or daycare, just a holding room for kids. I would recommend staying as far away from this "daycare" as possible. My baby was 6 months old when he went to this center. The infant room is tiny. The equipment is old. The infant teacher was a sweet, kind woman and did well with my child. The owner is a vile, opinionated woman. The owner screamed at me and my husband, told me my baby was too loud, told me my infant should be on a schedule (that she approved of). We could not pick up our child between certain hours. She gave food to our 6 month old baby that we did not provide or approve, such as raisins. She lectured us on parenting decisions, including using a pacifier for a baby. When I attempted to talk to this woman about our differences, she screamed at me and was demeaning. I was shaking. When she told me my child screamed too loud and woke up the other children, I made up my mind that my child needed to leave immediately. She was talking about a BABY,not an older child, a BABY. There is not enough staff to adequately care for children.

Here are some other things I observed; Children crying when their parents left and not one caregiver hugging or consoling them, just leaving the child at the door to cry. 1 year old and older children constantly watching television, sometimes educational videos, usually movies, I recognized Matilda once. I have never seen a child on the playground. My family drives by there, we live in the neighborhood, and never see children playing.

On the positive side, the center is very clean. There just isn't any love, understanding, or in my opinion proper early childhood education.

As a final note, you will find good reviews of this school in state and local department of children and family, because the owner knows how to make everything just legal. She does not have a good reputation in the community or amongst childcare givers.

My advice:if you use this place, show up when not expected, you will be surprised.

Shame on CitySearch. It is very sad that people like Victor Posniak, Allen Meyers and Ted Fling have so much negative energy to spend. I invite them to actually come to Small World and see the happy, polite, educated children. While they are here they can read the environmental investigation that was completed years ago to prove the health of our building. Broward County Child Care has been especially thorough and come every 90 days to examine health and safety.

We are very health conscience and do not allow drop-ins. Our children have Good Health Certificates on file. The caregivers at Small World have Steris Alcare available in each room on the walls just like the hospital and doctor's offices. Our floors are well varnished and steam cleaned. The bathrooms are cleaned with bleach and Lysol Industrial Foam. These items are locked in the closet but we will be happy to show them to you. All toys are cleaned regularly and at the first sign of a virus they are soaked in the tub with bleach. We are always open to new products and suggestions. 34 years has taught us a lot but we are still learning. Anyone worried about the health of a child care center need only to call Mr. Cameron, the director of Child Care.
